Video editing

The Spencer Show – Two Hearts (2007)

Spencer not only asked me to produce the glow effect for the main singer puppet, Charlene but also asked me to edit the music video combining the new glow effect video footage plus snippets from his previous two videos. I also mastered the final music track to the video and added appropriate car sound effect, magic sound effect and TARDIS sound effect. Sorry BBC!

Community Central TV (2007)

I was asked to edit a series of community television programmes, firstly I edited out the commercials out of their first programme and also reworked the credits and sent on DVD. I also post produced their second programme, creating lower third titles of text supplied to me and returning the finished programme on DVD.

St Neots Film Festival – Baggage Check (2006)

The St Neots Film Festival involved many local education establishments and entertainment groups to showcase their productions and material. Here I filmed and edited a Sixth Form production entitled ‘Baggage Check’ but unfortunately due to actor scheduling issues, only half the intended programme was transmitted during the evening but was still positively received by the audience.

St Neots Film Festival – Seasons of Love (2006)

The St Neots Film Festival involved many local education establishments and entertainment groups to showcase their productions and material. I was asked to film the recording of students singing the Rent song ‘Seasons of Love’ and produce a final DVD that was played during the evening. This music video also features on the college’s website.

St Neots Film Festival – Return to the Forbidden Planet (2006)

Shot during December 2005 this stage production of the film ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’ was edited down to feature highlights and played during the film festival evening. I was responsible for the recording of the show during its opening and closing night, the sound effects for the production were also supplied by me as well as the News Reporter segments between and beginning of each act. The News Reporter have been reproduced here with permission from the college.

St Neots Film Festival – Promo Trailer (2006)

The St Neots Film Festival involved many local education establishments and entertainment groups to showcase their productions and material. To promote the evening to potential audiences, the producers asked me to produce a trailer for the evening which featured the details of venue, time and contributing parties.

Doctor Who – Next Time Trailers/Pink Daleks (2007)

Joining a community of Doctor Who fan video editors, I produced two Next Time trailers for two classic series serials, ‘Destiny of the Daleks’ and ‘The Five Doctors’ in the style of the new 2005 series of Doctor Who’s trailers. This involved strategic selection of memorable sequences and dramatic clips. ‘Pink Daleks’ on the other hand was an idea that was brewing in my head for a long time and what I originally intended is exactly what you see hear – footage of Doctor Who’s Daleks cut to the Disney’s Dumbo track ‘Pink Elephants’

DAM Films – Space Station Fadger (2002)

Produced in 2002 this short film was conceived as part of a GCSE project which involved lots of puppets and greenscreen. Final composition and keying was done in an early version of Premiere Pro. This episode represents the pilot for a potential continuing series of adventures starring Robin the Crow as the Captain of the Space Station Fadger.

DAM Films – Time and the Doctors (2005)

A Doctor Who Fan Film shot in Manchester during the ‘Trial of Davros’ stage production was playing for one night only. The film was shot entirely on location and features a number of visual effects, namely dematerisations and CG composition.

DAM Films – Bus Shelters: An Information Video (2003)

Produced in 2003 as an A level production, this informative film sees presenter David Nagel scout out bus shelters for historical and informative research.

Sound Design

Doctor Who New Audio Adventures (2001-present)

This series of fan made audio plays have been produced on and off since 2001 and DAM Audios currently have six full length adventures (45 minutes in length) and five shorter plays (15 minutes each) productions. These productions are written in house and feature both in house actors and actresses and also feature actors and actresses from across the globe who record their dialogue separate and email their performances to be edited into each production. DAM Audios boast a large sound effects library of both domestic sound effects and specific Doctor Who sound effects.

Doctor Who – Time and Again (2007/8)

I am currently producing the soundtrack for Doctor Who fan film ‘Time and Again’ directed by Ryan Thorson and starring Dennis Kuhn as the Doctor. The film is 2 hours and 45 minutes long. My brief is to jazz up the original soundtrack using brand new sound effects and giving the original raw footage sound a spruce up by noise reducing any hiss or pop or click and also developing new sound effects for effect cues in scenes. I am also responsible for recompositing the incidental music into the final edit of the film – by adding reverb or other effects to the original Dennis Kuhn score to give it more life and substance. This is an on going project with constant communication with Ryan and myself, this film will be reproduced on DVD and available for purchase and download via Ryan and his worldwide distributors.

Bits and Pieces: The hardware and software of David Nagel

Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 – the latest version of this popular, industry standard software. I have been using Premiere since the early days and remember using v4.0! The latest version is as jam packed as the previous version (v2.0) and includes many new features. I have also produced a series of video tutorials for Premiere Pro for the company Media Roots.

Adobe After Effects CS3 – I’ve used AE on and off over the past few years and had used v6.5 and v7.0 before recently acquiring CS3. It’s a brilliant piece of software to produce visual effects and compositions for many applications. I am a mere beginner but have produced some nice graphics and effects.

Adobe Audition – previously Cool Edit and Cool Edit Pro v2.0 which was always a fantastic piece of software but Adobe bought them out and renamed it Audition, while not a vast improvement (the original Cool Edit windows are still evident in the menus) it still holds the best sound editor and recording for me.

Jasc’s Paintshop Pro – always been a Photoshophobe myself and have found Paintshop Pro’s facilities quite pleasing and easy to use. I’ve used a few versions and the latest versions reflect Photoshop unfortunately with menu layout and tools. But Paintshop to me is Photoshop to everyone else.

Microsoft’s Frontpage Express – my choice of web design and authoring. Does what I want it to do. Nuff said.

ConvertXtoDVD – VSO’s fantastic software, throw any video format you like at it and it converts it straight to DVD format ready for burning. Must have piece of software!

Fruityloops – I’ve never been a sequencer but Fruityloops has always been my choice for music production, able to record live straight into the software via my usb keyboard and adjust and edit the notes in the score editor. It plays soundfonts live while you record or playback.

On the other hand, I run a simple Windows XP Service Pack 2 workstation with 1gb of memory with 2.8ghz processor and 120gb hard drive with external 80gb hard drive. While primitive to some, it fully supports the applications I wish it too and I have never had a problem with my workstation. I also use a USB keystation MIDI keyboard and a Samson USB microphone for my audio work.
